Graduation Celebration for the last two cohorts of Community Interpreters

voicesinrefuge

We love to celebrate the hard work of our interpreting trainees, and last Thursday was no different. The graduates from the last two Community Interpreting courses (the online one in December 2024 and the in-person one in February 2025) have gathered at Nottingham Refugee Forum’s Café Narjis to enjoy an evening of fun, friendship and delicious treats. A sense of pride and achievement was in the air when our Head of Training and Development Barbara Spreiz Dhliwayo called each graduate to collect their hard-earned certificate.

Well done, everyone!

Congratulations to our graduating interpreters!

We greatly appreciate our participants’ feedback, which helps us improve our course to better suit the needs and interests of our learners.

The February training participants particularly appreciated how structured and organised the course was (they gave us a perfect score on this!) and how useful and interesting the content of the training was (96%).

One participant said: “The most useful or interesting part of the training was the hands-on practice section, focus on developing strong active listening skills, coupled with the ability to quickly analyse and process information in the source language while simultaneously formulating a clear and accurate translation in the target language.”

Role play practice was everyone’s favourite part. In each session we dedicated about 45 minutes to an hour practising all the techniques and skills in through challenging, but realistic scenarios. Whilst we focused on developing their interpreting skills, as a side effect, we have also discovered some Oscar-worthy performances in supporting roles of clients, patients, doctors and advisers.

“You've totally changed my perspective on this topic, I can't believe how much I learned in just one session.”

91% of the participants told us the training met their expectations, and that they will be able to apply the knowledge acquired. Some of them have already started volunteering with us, whilst others signed up to join our base of freelancers.

There will be more opportunities to change perspectives, or even lives! Follow our social media for upcoming training courses, both in-person and online, and sign up to become a professional community interpreter with Voices in Refuge!

Until then, enjoy a few more photos from our graduation party:
