Voices in Refuge on the go: delivering Community Interpreting training in Oxford

voicesinrefuge

Voices in Refuge have been invited by Flo’s and Equal Start in Oxford to deliver our course to a group of mums who are all keen to become community interpreters and serving their local community. We have tailored the course to adapt to their needs and interests (interpreting in healthcare, especially in maternity services), and kept the sessions flexible to adjust to childcare responsibilities of the participants.

Over four weekly sessions in January and February this year, we equipped 16 women with essential community interpreting skills, empowered them to know their worth as skilled professionals, and raised their confidence in their own abilities. Through vigorous discussions and entertaining role play, the participants embraced the challenges of the community interpreter role. The sessions were informative and intense, but also fun!

On 13th February we called it a wrap with a mini graduation celebration, when we handed out certificates to all attendees.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share our passion about community interpreting with our Oxford-based participants, and we are looking forward to returning there to deliver another course.

If you are, or know of, a charity or community group anywhere in the UK, who would like to offer an 18-hour course on the essential community interpreting skills to their staff, volunteers or clients, please get in touch with us: training@voicesinrefuge.com
