Graduation Party for the newest cohort of community interpreters

voicesinrefuge

In October, Voices in Refuge have run another Introduction to Community Interpreting course for aspiring interpreters from across the city and county. 14 learners who speak 14 languages between them have joined us on a journey of discovering the challenges professional community interpreters face when facilitating communication between public service providers and service users from refugee and migrant communities. From difficult conversations to engaging role plays, the new interpreters, most of whom have lived experience of forced migration themselves, demonstrated great curiosity and willingness to learn, supported and encouraged each other in the process, and passed all assessments with flying colours. On 22nd November 2024, at our most recent graduation party, everyone received their well-earned certificates, with their friends and family cheering them on.

“This project is amazing, it can help people with refugee background build their confidence and skills, and also improve quality of interpreting in society.”

We are very pleased with everyone’s engagement and the progress they made during the course. Some of them have already started volunteering as interpreters at Nottingham Refugee Forum, or joined the Voices in Refuge team on a freelance basis.

“I loved the practical exercises where we worked on real-life scenarios, like translating dialogues or documents. They helped me feel more confident and prepared for situations I might encounter in the future.”

Our interpreters can be booked for in-person or remote appointments through our website or by getting in touch with our coordinator Matt: info@voicesinrefuge.com

“I would like to appreciate your wonderful and kind efforts for bringing us such a valuable experience and opportunity like this training.”

Barbara and Halima are looking forward to training more interpreters in the near future. More specifically, we are offering an online course starting next week, and an in-person course at Nottingham Central Library in February 2025. Both courses are generously funded by the Nottingham City Council.
